海明威：真正的高貴不是比別人優越，而是超越過去的自己

1961年，海明威（Ernest Miller Hemingway，1899.07.21－1961.07.02）在愛達荷州凱徹姆的家中用獵槍自殺身亡。

海明威一生中的感情錯綜複雜，先後結過四次婚，是美國“迷惘的一代”（Lost Generation）作家中的代表人物，作品中對人生、世界、社會都表現出了迷茫和彷徨。海明威一向以文壇硬漢著稱，堪稱是美利堅民族的精神豐碑。海明威被認為是二十世紀最重要的小說家之一，在美國文學史乃至世界文學史上都佔有重要地位。

今天與諸君分享的，是海明威的經典散文《真正的高貴》。作者說，“比他人優越並無任何高貴之處，真正的高貴在於超越過去的自我（There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man. The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self）”。

在風平浪靜的海面上，

每一個人都可以成為領航員。

但是，

假如只有陽光而沒有陰影，

只有歡樂而沒有痛苦，

那就全然不是人生。

就拿最幸福的人來說吧，

——他們的命運是一團糾纏的紗線，

喪親之痛和神恩賜福此起彼伏，

讓我們悲歡交替，

甚至連死亡本身都讓人生更為可愛。

人們在生命的莊嚴時刻，

在哀傷和喪親的陰影之下，

最接近真實的自我。

在生活或事業的各種事務之中，

才智的效用遠不如性格，

頭腦的效用遠不如心性，

天資遠不如由判斷力約束的自製、耐心與教養。

我一向認為，

內心開始生活得更為嚴謹的人，

他外在的生活會開始變得更為簡樸。

在一個奢侈浪費的時代，

但願我能夠向世人表明：

人類真正的需求是多麽的稀少，

反思自己的過錯，

以至於不重蹈覆轍，

才是真正的悔悟。

True Nobility

In a calm sea every man is a pilot.

But all sunshine without shade, all pleasure without pain, is not life at all.

Take the lot of the happiest—it is a tangled yarn.

Bereavements and blessings, one following another, make us sad and blessed by turns.

Even death itself makes life more loving.

Men come closest to their true selves in the sober moments of life, under the shadows of sorrow and loss.

In the affairs of life or of business, it is not intellect that tells so much as character, not brains so much as heart, not genius so much as self-control, patience, and discipline, regulated by judgment.

I have always believe that the man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without.

In an age of extravagance and waste, I wish I could show to the world how few the real wants of humanity are.

To regret one’s errors to the point of not repeating them is true repentance.

There is nothing noble in being superior to some other man.

The true nobility is in being superior to your previous self.
